Start with the monitor, not the tower
Resolution and refresh rate set your budget. A 1080p 144Hz panel is satisfied by roughly $900 of hardware. A 1440p 165Hz panel wants an RTX 5070 or RX 9070 XT class card. A 4K 120Hz display genuinely needs the top of this list plus upscaling. Buying more GPU than your display can show is the most common way people waste money.
Check the power supply before anything else
System integrators cut costs where buyers do not look, and the PSU is the classic target. An 850W 80+ Gold unit means you can drop in a much stronger GPU in two years. A no-name 550W unit means your upgrade path costs an extra $120 and an afternoon.
VRAM is the new bottleneck
GPU compute has outpaced memory allocation on mainstream cards. 12GB is workable at 1440p; 16GB removes the anxiety. When VRAM runs out you do not get a gently lower frame rate, you get stutter — which is far more noticeable during play.
Storage is the cheapest fix, so do not overpay for it
A 1TB build is not disqualifying. A 2TB Gen4 NVMe costs well under $100 and takes five minutes to install. Weigh a storage shortfall against the CPU and GPU, which are far more expensive to change later.
Buy on a price dip
Prebuilt pricing is volatile. The same configuration can swing several hundred dollars across a quarter. If a machine here is at the top of its band, wait for the next deal cycle rather than paying peak.
